A teacher passed away suddenly from the flu just a few months after marrying his high school love, his family has shared.

Harrison Vaughan, 25, from North Carolina, sadly lost his life to complications from the flu after his health worsened in just a few days. Until that, he was a perfectly healthy man.

He recently married Hayley, his girlfriend since they were in ninth grade. The wedding took place just nine months before Vaughan's death on February 20. Hayley told FOX8 WGHP: "We are all heartbroken. I know I can't get through this alone."

Richard Hardee, the head of Calvary Day School where Harrison was a PE teacher and baseball coach, said Harrison was a "terrific young fella." He told WFMY: "He's young, he's active, he's in good shape, great shape and it's just hard to imagine that he could decline so quickly."

The flu is a virus that is especially common in winter and can lead to deadly complications, particularly in young people, older people, and those with weak immune systems.

Cases increased in the UK and US over the winter period, with health officials warning that the new school term could be a breeding ground for bugs and coughs.

The most recent numbers from the NHS show an average of 1,837 patients in hospital with the flu each day last week in the UK. This was more than three times higher than the same week last year.

Symptoms include a high temperature, body aches, feeling tired or exhausted, dry cough, sore throat, headache, trouble sleeping, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, and vomiting.

If you're feeling sick with flu symptoms and you're older than 65, expecting a baby, have health problems, or your body doesn't fight off germs well, you should see a doctor. Also, if you don't get better after seven days, it's time to get checked out.

Sadly, Harrison passed away just a few days after he started feeling sick. His school shared their sadness: "It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of the death of our colleague and friend, Harrison Vaughan, who passed away today."

"We will miss him more than words can express. Please pray for Harrison's wife, Haley, his parents, Erik and Holly Vaughan, his siblings, Hunter and Olivia-Beth, and the entire Vaughan family."

His family has since created a GoFundMe account to help create a scholarship fund in his honour. "Harrison was a kindly light. His charisma was magnetic. He touched and inspired so many in such a short time. His love and passion for Jesus Christ flowed through him and into the lives of those around him," his friends and family wrote on the giving site.
