It's no secret that Prince William had a difficult childhood - but he found something very special in wife Kate Middleton that secured his future happiness, a royal expert has said.

William and his brother Harry were first hand witnesses to their parents' volatile marriage and subsequent divorce. But the heir has gone on to find great happiness in his own union with Kate, with whom he shares three children.

"William had a difficult childhood and a traumatic adolescence," Jennie Bond told OK magazine. "But with Kate at his side and the role model of her own stable family network, he has found immense joy in his marriage – and something I think he will be counting his blessings for.

"It has kept him grounded through the turmoil of his grandparents' deaths and his father's accession to the throne – not to mention the troubles with Harry and Andrew. This family relationship means that William and Kate have three happy, grounded children and an equal partnership in which they are both extremely hands-on parents."

She added: "William loved his mother greatly and is very close to his father, but he must sometimes look back at his own childhood and be determined that his own children will never have to undergo that same emotional turmoil."

Notably, William dropped everything to be by his wife's side when she underwent surgery in January, and has been on hand to care for their children, ensuring they feel reassured during her ongoing recuperation. "It is a modern outlook in a modern marriage," Jennie notes, "and one that looks set to last happily for a lifetime".

A body language expert previously spoke about William and Kate's romance - and the telltale signs that signal what their marriage is like behind closed doors. Just last year, the and went head to head in a spinning competition last year - which Kate won.

And, according to expert Judi James, William's 'refreshing' behaviour after he had been resoundingly beaten by his wife showed something that, for the was truly "groundbreaking".

"In terms of their relationship this spin bike contest also illustrates something hugely important. When a couple can compete for earnest like this in public and where Kate can sit with her hands on her hips or placing a consoling hand on her husband's arm as she is given the winner's cup, we are looking at two very sound and solid egos in a very well-balanced, loving relationship," she said.

"Kate has no qualms about showing her husband up like this in public and he looks happy to celebrate her win. For a Windsor male, this is ground-breaking stuff."

Judi also pointed out that these body-language signals between Kate and William are a far cry from those displayed between William's parents, Charles and Diana, noting that Charles "was famously competitive about their levels of popularity with the public and his jealousy was said to be one more nail in the coffin of their marriage".
