Love Island made its comeback on Monday night, the first winter series in three years - with new host Maya Jama taking on the show.

The last, and first, winter edition aired in 2020 just before the coronavirus pandemic which left the summer series cancelled for that year.

While the summer edition returned in 2021, there were a number of protocols and guidelines ITV and the cast and crew had to follow, in order to keep it on air.

As for the winter show, it did not air In January 2021 due to Covid restrictions, while it was also cancelled in 2022.

It was reported that ITV wanted to focus on the main summer show of that year, deciding not to air two series.

The 2022 summer series, hosted by previous presenter Laura Whitmore, was a huge hit - with bosses no doubt hoping the latest series goes the same way.

Laura quit the show last year after finding some elements of filming the series "difficult".

The host, who replaced original presenter Caroline Flack in 2020, announced her news on Instagram - just days after detailing about how she was struggling with the backlash she faced from fans during the summer series.

"Some news! I won’t be hosting the next series of Love island," she penned at the time. "There are certain elements of the show I’ve found very difficult that cannot be changed some due to the format, including the flying back and forth to South Africa along with my new conflicting projects.

"I wish it was still possible but know you’ll be in safe hands. I was only planning to fill in for Caroline for a series and it turned into 3 series. I hope I did you proud Caroline."

Love Island airs every night at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
