The search for a toddler who fell into a river has entered its fifth day- as his family paid tribute to their 'cheeky' son.
Two-year-old Xielo Maruziva was walking with his family on a footpath in the Aylestone area of Leicester on Sunday when he fell into the River Soar. The boy's father was rushed to hospital after jumping in to try and save him.
A huge search has followed in the hours and days since, involving police dogs, helicopters, drones, boats and diving teams from across the UK. But efforts were hampered by poor weather conditions yesterday, with more bad weather expected on Thursday. A Met Office yellow weather warning for rain is in force for the area from 5am until 5pm today.
Police searches of the river have continued in poor weather conditions (PA)Local residents living near the Aylestone Meadows nature reserve have said that the initial search may have been affected by muddy water in the River Soar, which has been higher than usual in recent months. One person told the told The Indpendent: “I live not too far away from there and go past the River Soar & Grand Union Canal every day. In good weather the river is shallow and clear, but it’s been high for ages and looks like mud."
Police who have studied CCTV footage have said there was no evidence to suggest it was anything other than "a tragic set of circumstances". The boy's family continue to be supported by specialist officers.

Speaking yesterday in a statement released by police, Xielo’s mother said: “Xielo is a cheeky, funny, friendly, smart, caring and independent little boy. He never fails to make me laugh or smile and always loves a cuddle and some kisses.

Me, his dad and the whole family are so heartbroken at what has happened. We thank everyone who has supported us and helped us during this time. We are extremely grateful for this. All we want is for Xielo to be found as soon as possible. Thank you.”
On Wednesday, Leicestershire Police Assistant Chief Constable Michaela Kerr thanked the public and emergency services for their support during the investigation. She said: "We have been truly overwhelmed by the support we have received from forces and other agencies across the country as well as from our communities and the wider public. We really do thank you for this. The priority for us all remains to find this little boy and we are grateful for all of your help and support.
“Specialist officers continue to provide full support to the family and our thoughts very much remain with them. I thank them for their bravery, their support and co-operation with us at this extremely traumatic time." Members of the public have been asked to avoid doing their own searches due to the risk from river flooding in the area.
