It looks like they will get back to the cinemas as an ambitious new project will see four new films about the Beatles being released, with each one telling the story through the eyes of a different band member.

Acclaimed film directer Sam Mendes came up with the idea and will direct all four films having been given permission to tell the Fab Four's full life stories and also use their music rights in a film project. He hopes the feature films will be ready to screen in 2027 and the makers promised an "epic cinematic experience".

The project marks the first time Apple Corps Ltd. and the Beatles - Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison - have granted full life story and music rights for a scripted film.

Sam Mendes said: "I'm honoured to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time, and excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies."

Mendes will direct all four films and produce alongside his Neal Street Productions partner Pippa Harris and Neal Street's Julie Pastor. Jeff Jones will executive produce for Apple Corps Ltd. Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) will finance and distribute the movies into cinemas in 2027.

"We intend this to be a uniquely thrilling, and epic cinematic experience: four films, told from four different perspectives which tell a single story about the most celebrated band of all time," said Pippa Harris.

"To have The Beatles' and Apple Corps' blessing to do this is an immense privilege. From our first meeting with Tom Rothman and Elizabeth Gabler, it was clear that they shared both our passion and ambition for this project, and we can’t think of a more perfect home than Sony Pictures."

Founded in Liverpool in 1960, the Beatles are widely recognised as the most influential pop/rock act of all time. The four piece - John, Paul, George and Ringo - disbanded in 1970 but remain record holders as the act with the most Number 1 albums in Official Chart history. The have 18 number one singles in the UK, 16 number one albums and 29 top 10 singles.

The Beatles released films of their own whilst they were together including A Hard Days Night, Help! and the animated cartoon Yellow Submarine. There was also the 1995 documentary series called The Beatles Anthology.
