McDonald's employee reveals how they prepare their onions (Image: justinalbert19/TikTok)

A McDonald's employee has revealed how the fast-food chain prepares its onions, leaving some fans feeling "sick". The TikTok video, posted by @justinalbert19, shows the worker adding dried onions and ice to a pot, filling it with water, and stirring. Once the mixture is thick, it's covered and ready to be used. This revelation shocked many viewers, with one asking: "Is this a joke?" Another said: "I don't know what I expected tbh."

Another viewer commented: "They can't even cut up their own onions." Someone else wrote: "I don't even eat McDonald's but I'm still nauseous from seeing this." One person defended the process, saying: "Not y'all expecting them to sit there cutting up fresh onions," while another added: "Normalise people eating dehydrated foods because people will eat instant mash."

A different McDonald's worker then explained: "There are actually two different types of onions, fresh ones and the dehydrated ones. Dehydrated goes on the McDoubles, Big Macs, cheeseburgers, etc and the freshly sliced ones go on burgers like the quarter pounder."

It comes after a former McDonald's chef spilled the beans on why the fast-food giant's milkshake machine always seems to be 'out of order'. Mike Haracz, who worked as a corporate chef for the company until 2019, has been dishing out behind-the-scenes secrets on his TikTok channel. One of these juicy tidbits is the real reason why you often can't get a milkshake or McFlurry.

In one of his recent videos, he shares a comment from a viewer who works at McDonald's: "I work at McDonald's. They [the milkshake machine] is most probably not broken. We just don't want to add the mix if it's busy. If it's not [busy], then they're just hating." Serving up a milkshake or McFlurry when the machine needs topping up means a staff member has to go to the back of the shop, get the right mix, put it in the machine, and wait until it comes out just right.

This can take a while, which isn't great when there are customers waiting both inside the restaurant and at the drive-thru. That's when you might hear 'Sorry, the milkshake machine is broken'. But this isn't the only reason a worker might tell a little white lie about the machine. It could also be going through a cleaning cycle, or they might not know how to put it back together after cleaning it the night before.

Mike, a former McDonald's corporate chef, shared some insider knowledge about the infamous ice cream machine. He said: "I'm a former McDonald's corporate chef and let's talk about the ice cream machine. So a lot of times it's not broken. Either the person who knows how to assemble and disassemble it is not there. If they are there, it's probably during peak time. So you know, 2am would probably be a great time to clean the ice cream machine but with a minimal kitchen staff at that time, they're probably really busy and really can't do it so they'll do it during more peak times."

"If it is not assembled appropriately, it is not going to work. It's my understanding that the cleaning cycle takes quite a while. Running the cleaning cycle and doing everything involved in that is probably not getting done at 2am or 3am because staffing levels at that time are so low. They're busy doing other things. So a lot of times, it's not broken, it's either cleaning or somebody has no idea how to reassemble it and get it up and running."
