Arrowhead Game Studios lays out its plan to alleviate the server-based problems plaguing Helldivers 2, with an update expected today, as its popularity continues to reach new heights.

Anyone who’s tried playing Helldivers 2 since it launched earlier this month will know the toils of trying to get online and, you know, actually play the game. As Sony’s first-ever simultaneous game launch on both PC and PS5, the third-person co-op shooter is proving a lot more popular than expected – with ‘failed to join’ lobby errors popping up left and right. The good news is that developer Arrowhead has been actively addressing these issues the best it can, and today's update should lead to an easing up of matchmaking wait times and server load.

As outlined in a message in the official Helldivers 2 Discord server, Arrowhead has said it will “Have improvements rolling out this week focused on the most serious problems in the game: login, matchmaking, and server load”, before stating that “One update for PC and PS5” will roll out on both platforms. This will be music to the ears of players who've spent hours constantly hitting refresh on the Helldivers 2 lobby screen. However, the Discord message also notes that “No single update will solve all the issues” and that players should expect to see more patches soon.

To Helldivers and back

The full list of Helldivers 2 patch notes for today's update has yet to be released, and it’s unlikely that the developer will publish them until it starts to be rolled out later today. That said, its nature to address “Login, matchmaking, and server load” issues specifically means that players on both PS5 and PC should have a much easier time hopping online to go bug blasting with friends once it’s been made available, ensuring this second-party PlayStation console exclusive reaches the healthy state it should have been in at launch.

Bear in mind that this latest Helldivers 2 update also isn’t expected to be the last one coming over this next week either. It could be that the path to making the shooter a more stable online experience is a slower process than is ideal, but Arrowhead makes clear in its post that the team is “Working hard to make sure that the game is a stable place to spread Managed Democracy to every planet in the galaxy”.

Here’s hoping that today’s Helldivers 2 update will see some dramatic changes regarding how matchmaking is handled, because everyone deserves to sink lead into a giant bug's face.
