People in Edinburgh have been left confused after a string of odd-looking signs popped up on busy streets.

According to the local council, the signs appearing in the Leith and Newhaven areas of the city are not legitimate road signs. While a passer-by could think they are interesting traffic management signs, closer inspection reveals a stark difference.

The signs reference YLT, or Young Leith Team - the notorious street gang. Passerby and Leith local, Julia, said: "I live close by and saw these when I walked past earlier this morning and am very interested in what this means.

"However, I am a little concerned that they have made them look like road signs, motorists might get confused as to where they can and can't go. Leith Walk is already as confusing as ever with the introduction of the tram and other lanes. I do hope the council takes them down if they are not legitimate as they could cause some confusion."

Another resident of Leith, Andrew said: "I've seen a few of these recently where I live and a few down in the Newhaven area. "I have no idea what they mean, and if these are new signs introduced by the DVLA I can wholeheartedly say that I would fail a modern-day theory test if I was given one tomorrow.

He further told EdinburghLive: "The council is always adding in more ridiculous driving regulations, particularly in Leith. I wouldn't be surprised if it was them who put this sign here, whatever it means."
