The King and Prince William have been holding secret one-on-one talks at Sandringham, as Charles continues his recovery from ongoing cancer treatment.

The Prince of Wales is preparing to return to royal duties next week, starting on Sunday with an appearance at the Bafta Film Awards in London. The possibility of William taking on extra duties to fill in for the King on occasion has been discussed, although royal sources said it was “not on the agenda for now”.

William had been taking a leave of absence in recent weeks after the Princess of Wales was admitted to hospital for abdominal surgery on January 16.

Kate, 42, is now recovering at home in Windsor but is not expected back to public engagements until after Easter. William, Kate and their three children - Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight and Princes Loui s, five - have this week been staying at their Norfolk home, Anmer Hall, during half term.

The family have also spent time with the King, who has been staying at his nearby Sandringham estate during the latter half of the week and weekends in between travelling back to London for weekly cancer treatment.

The Mirror understands William is preparing for a key role at next month’s Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey. Queen Camilla will be the most senior royal at the Abbey service on March 11, but William could do a reading.

Royal sources confirmed the King and his heir had met in private to discuss future plans, amid talks of William taking on potential extra duties following the King's cancer diagnosis.

One source said: “The Prince of Wales has not been asked to step in or step up. but would of course be willing to take on extra engagements if required. Right now the King is fully focussed on a return to duties as soon as possible so nothing has changed. “Any such meetings with his father would be private.” Buckingham Palace or Kensington Palace did not comment.
