A passenger on Southwest Airlines was left fuming when another traveller sat directly behind him on their almost empty plane. Chef Anthony Thomas, from Washington, America, was looking forward to reclining in peace - but was left startled when one of only a few other fellow flyers, who had the pick of the plane, sat directly behind him, despite dozens of other options available.

“Imagine having the luxury of boarding a flight with only two passengers on it,” Thomas wrote on X, formerly Twitter, as he shared a selfie he took that clearly showed the man sitting directly behind him on a very empty plane. Of all the seats on the flight, look where he decided to sit.”

With only two other passengers seen spaced across at least 10 rows behind Thomas, the airline's ‘open seat’ policy clearly grated with Thomas, whose selfie has been viewed more than 36million times, sparking a debate on airplane etiquette in the comments.

One said: “It’s just like the folks who park right next to you with tons of available spaces,” while another commented: “I think these people are extremely codependent.”

One advised him to recline the seat all the way back, while another said: “That’s the same dude who skips the 30 empty urinals to snuggle up and try to talk while it’s business time.”

However many were on the other man’s side, with one saying: “Guy’s probably scared of flying, instead of being super creepy just ask him to sit in the same row – maybe you will make a friend,” while another said: “I pick my seat when I book the flight. If it happens to be an empty flight and I’m right behind you, it ain’t going to change the fact that that’s the seat I wanted.”
