The Lionesses have been honoured by Transport for London (TfL) as part of the rebranding of the London Overground.

TfL have announced they’re rebranding six lines in August with names inspired by the capital’s and the country’s diverse modern history, from Windrush and Suffragette to the Lionesses, each with its own colour and thus changing the famous tube map.

Sarina Wiegman's side have been nothing short of remarkable since their EURO2022 triumph, a victory which marked the first-ever major tournament trophy for the women’s national team and the first major tournament trophy for an England senior football team since 1966.

The Lionesses' unprecedented success has subsequently led to an exponential rise in women’s football development across the country, including initiatives to make the game more accessible to young girls while increasing the appetite and visibility of the professional game.

In honour of their exploits, the line running from Euston to Watford Junction, which runs through Wembley where the Lionesses won not only the 2022 European Championship but the inaugural Finalissima against Brazil last year, has been named The Lioness line.

It is not the first time Lionesses have been honoured with forms of transport. Indeed, Euro 2022 hero Chloe Kelly, who scored the game-winning goal against Germany in the final, saw a TfL 92 bus featuring her name on it shortly after the triumph.

Meanwhile, England and Manchester United No.1 Mary Earps, who was crowned FIFA’s Best Goalkeeper for an historic second successive year, had one of Nottingham’s trams named after the local hero. The 30-year-old unveiled the tram at the Nottingham Express Transit (NET) depot earlier after last summer’s Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The Overground’s new branding is similar to that used to denote the London Underground lines on the iconic Tube map, the difference being that the new Overground sections are distinguished as two smaller parallel lines. These will be grey, yellow, light blue, green, maroon and red.

Officials say TfL will now start the process of rebranding the Overground, with the full roll out expected to be completed 'in one go' by the end of the year. This includes an updated Tube map, a 'refreshed' London Overground network map and a number of on-network assets, including wayfinding signage at all 113 stations.

TfL said 'careful validation and testing' were undertaken to ensure the line colour selection was as inclusive as possible. This included active consideration of those with visual impairments, for example those with colour blindness.
