A mum claims the biggest chip she's ever seen has left her kids "too frightened" to eat it - so the seven inch monster remains in her freezer.

Marie Sparkles was about to cook some chips as a snack and during a play fight with her two daughters, whipped out a fry from the packet to defend herself. But instead of finding a modest spud-based sword in her hand, the 38-year-old unleashed a giant "offensive weapon" that stunned her daughters who surrendered with their hands up, leaving them all in fits of laughter.

Now Marie jokes that her daughters Elouise, 16, and 12-year-old Esme, are too scared to eat the chip and so it has never been cooked. The clinical assistant, from Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, said: "It's the biggest chip I've ever seen. It was such a funny moment. I just pulled it out of the bag and I saw everyone's faces like 'woah'. I was like 'it's only a chip' and I looked down and it was so long.

"It's just over seven inches long and an inch wide, not quite a record holder but still very long and chunky. When I looked at it I thought 'God you could do some damage with it' because it was so big, so we just laughed and put it away. It's an offensive weapon and it should be contained."

Marie was preparing to cook the Tesco Finest British Chunky Oven Chips in the air fryer as a snack for her kids. "I was cooking some chips for the kids as a snack," she explained. "They were winding me up and fighting me from behind. As a joke I thought 'right I'm going to use the chip as a sword'.

"When I turned around both kids went 'oh' shocked and then I looked down and noticed how big the chip was. When I looked down and saw how big it was I was quite surprised by it. We all just burst out laughing. You know when someone attacks you and you go 'woah woah woah' and put your hands out? That's what the kids had done. I just looked down and saw how massive it was and we all just fell to the floor laughing.

But the super-sized chip wasn't the only one in there, with Marie saying the packet, snapped up from the Durham Road branch in Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, contained other "whoppers". Marie said: "I don't normally buy that brand at all, but it was just what I fancied at the time.

"Quite a few of them were long, just not that long. It was a bag of whoppers. My little one chickened out and shoved it back in the freezer. I think everyone was frightened to cook it, now we might have a ceremonial cook or something."

A Tesco spokesperson said: "We can't peel our eyes away from this fry-scraper of a chip! Our delicious Finest Chunky Chips are a mash made in heaven for any meal and we are delighted that Marie has saved it in her freezer to show the world this big dipper."
