Fans finally received a peek into the new Wicked world as the trailer dropped at the Super Bowl.
What originally started as the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire titled Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West received a Broadway musical adaptation. Now, the love of the story continues as pop star Ariana Grande returns to her musical roots alongside Cynthia Erivo.
The movie takes place in the immersive universe of Oz, but before our favorite protagonist, Dorothy, has made her way over from Kansas. While fans already loved the original movie as is, the film version is expected to take a deeper dive into the world of Oz, giving fans a whole new appreciation.

Movie creators decided to split the film into two parts, mirroring the set up of a Broadway musical. However, where the split comes is currently unknown since Defying Gravity is typically at the end of Act I, but the song is so iconic that holding onto it for the second instalment could be a major strategic move.

Details about what else could be in store are currently being kept under wraps. As for more music, though, songwriters did add in two new songs, a total win for musical theater fans.
Act I of Wicked will come to movie theaters on November 27, 2024. The long awaited film previously experienced production delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the SAG-AFTRA strike. Wicked was first lated and green lit by Universal Studios in 2012, so it's been a long road to release fro filmmakers, especially as they coordinated between England and the United States through the creation of the film.
Cynthia Erivo takes the lead as Elphaba Thropp who struggled through life as a very different girl with green skin. Fans know her as the Wicked Witch of the West as her story eventually turns more bitter. Pop powerhouse Ariana Grande plays alongside her as popular girl Glinda Upland. She later becomes Glinda the Good, a foil character to her wicked counterpart.
Jeff Goldblum will be tackling the role of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but in this story the tale isn't necessarily centric on that brand namesake. Plus, Ariana's new controversial boyfriend, Ethan Slater, will be playing Boq who is fittingly in love with her character. Michelle Yeoh will be joining the cast as their school's headmistress and Jonathan Bailey will plays Winkie Prince.
