Prince William is taking steps to protect his wife as she continues to recover from abdominal surgery.

There has been increased pressure on the Prince following the news that his father, King Charles, has been diagnosed with cancer. While people have suggested that he takes on more royal duties in the monarch's absence, he is also caring for Princess Kate and their three young children while fulfilling his own commitments.

Speaking on GB News, Ailsa Anderson - former press secretary for the late Queen - explains: "I think William will try and shield her from as much of that pressure as possible. I hear they've gone to Sandringham for half term week next week, to recuperate. And I think he will try and give her as much space as she needs to recuperate."

Ailsa also addressed critics who have accused the Waleses of not doing enough before the Princess of Wales, 42, had surgery. She said: "Give them a break! For Prince William, family and duty go hand in hand.

"...We don't know what they're doing behind the scenes. There are meetings, there is paperwork, there's planning. And also they've got three small children." It follows claims that is "still processing" shock cancer diagnosis.

Just a week after Kate was discharged from hospital following abdominal surgery , it was revealed the King had been diagnosed with a form of cancer.

It meant Charles had to cancel and postpone upcoming public-facing duties, while he embarked on a treatment programme. In turn, William, who took a break from royal duties while Kate was in hospital, may need to step in to represent his father at events - although this situation has not arisen so far.

According to the , there is a "slight sense of bewilderment" in some royal circles over William fiercely protecting his diary. But a source close to him told the publication: "At times like this, it is a reminder that as well as being the future head of state, he is also a human being. He is processing the news of his father having cancer as a human being. Given the seriousness with which he takes his role, of course, it is something he will be thinking about."

Meanwhile, Kate is said to be "recovering well" after leaving Windsor for the first time since coming home after surgery. Kate, 42, returned home to Adelaide Cottage in January, 13 days after surgery at The London Clinic, where she was reunited with her children , and

After more than a week resting in Windsor, she along with William and the children have headed to their Anmer Hall home in Norfolk in order to spend the half-term holidays there. A source told the : "Catherine is recovering well. She was looking forward to a change of scene and will be able to take it easy in Norfolk while the children let off steam with William."

Also close by at Sandringham is the King and he may be able to spend time with William, Kate and his grandchildren during their week off school.
