Brits planning cruises are being warned to check their travel insurance details, or they could be risking a nasty surprise if anything goes wrong.
Experts have warned holidaymakers that cruise holidays do not follow the same rules as other holidays when it comes to what's covered - and in fact, you'll need specific cruise insurance. That covers a whole host of scenarios such as missing your ship's departure at the port, being confined to your cabin and therefore being unable to attend excursions you've paid for, or in extreme situations needing to be medically evacuated while the ship's at sea.
The team at Just Travel Cover have urged Brits to check their policies, and if cruise insurance isn't included, to ensure they take out the right policy as soon as they book.
Their team explained: "With cruising, there is often an increase in medical and financial risks; unfortunately, your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) cannot be used on board, and with the cost of medical treatment overseas rising, particularly in the USA, it’s essential cruisers are well covered for all their needs. Medical costs can vary from country to country, so make sure to tell your travel insurer all the destinations you are going to.
"Several cruise lines require passengers to have Travel Insurance as a mandatory condition for sailing. You will typically be asked to confirm you have Travel Insurance at the terminal, and you may need to provide proof of your policy. In some cases, you might even be denied boarding if it is not arranged.

If something goes wrong, either onboard the ship or before you depart, Cruise Travel Insurance can cover you against the unforeseen."
Missing a cruise ship is top of most people's worries. If you've booked an official excursion with the cruise line and there are delays getting back, the ship will wait for you. However if you go independently and miss the ship, it will likely depart without you as the Captain has a tight schedule to follow. It's a nightmare scenario, but there are steps you can take to mitigate the risk.
For a start, take copies of your travel documents such as your passport, just in case you need these later. (Keep them separate to other valuables for extra security!). It's also worth adding the phone numbers of your cruise ship cruise ship, port agent (these are often listed on the daily schedules on board), your cruise line/tour operator's customer service department, and your travel insurance provider.
If you miss the ship, your first step should be to find the port agent who can help you sort your onward travel - just be aware that this will be at your own expense including any flights or hotels at a destination where you can meet the ship.
You'll also need to contact your tour operator and travel insurance provider, who may be able to help you make arrangements to get to your next port of call.
