Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker are likely to feel "anxious" about having a second child together as they'll be desperate to provide a sibling for their son, according to an expert.

It's been reported the couple are hoping to welcome another child next year, this time through surrogacy. Kourtney shares three kids with her ex-boyfriend Scott Disick and Travis shares two children with his ex-wife Shanna Moakler, as well as a step-daughter. Rocky is the first child Kourtney and Travis had together.

Fertility expert Tracey Sainsbury believes Kourtney and Travis might find trying for a second child "more stressful" than their first. Speaking to The Mirror, she explained: "Trying to conceive is stressful, especially when you have a child, more stressful sometimes as you don't just want another child, you want a sibling for your child.

"Pregnancy and birth experiences may increase anxiety around a future pregnancy hence couples may prefer surrogacy. But in order to use a gestational surrogate, embryos would need to be created, which would mean a further IVF cycle, so the plan may be for egg donation and surrogacy or traditional surrogacy, which is much less common."

Dr Gillian Lockwood also believes Kourtney's past experiences with IVF could be behind her decision to try surrogacy. She explained: "Women, especially those who have had failure with IVF, may choose to use a surrogate for many reasons.

"Sometimes they have health issues or a history of recurrent miscarriage that makes them fear that they cannot safely carry a pregnancy. Many women who choose or need to use donor eggs also opt for surrogacy."

Dr Lockwood explained there are two types of surrogacy. "One is called 'straight' surrogacy where the woman who is to carry the pregnancy and give birth is also the genetic mother of the baby and the pregnancy has been achieved by direct insemination of the father-to-be sperm.

"Much more popular is 'gestational' surrogacy where a donor egg is used to create an embryo which can then be implanted in the surrogate mother," she told us. The fertility specialist said this second option is "preferred" among many parents-to-be.

Dr Lockwood explained: "This is often preferred because it allows the couple to 'match' the intended mother's physical characteristics and it is felt that there is less risk of a surrogate mother becoming attached to a baby that is not genetically related to her."

Dr Gillian Lockwood is a consultant fertility specialist and advisor at Fertility Family. Tracey Sainsbury is a fertility expert working with femme health.
