The Met Office has announced where is expected to get snow in the UK on Friday - and the wintry weather is far from over yet.

Heavy snow saw roads clogged up and forced schools to close early across the UK yesterday And today the national forecaster is expecting further snowfall to be concentrated in the far north of the country.

Weather warnings are in place for snow or a hazardous combination of snow and ice again on Friday, with some of these lasting well into the weekend.

In a warning notice covering most of northern Scotland, the national forecaster writes: "Outbreaks of sleet and snow will gradually spread northwards across the warning area during Friday afternoon and through Saturday.

"Accumulations will vary from place to place, but some areas are expected to see 1-3 cm of snow through this period, and perhaps as much as 10-20 cm in some locations on higher ground (above about 300 metres). Ice will be an additional hazard. During Saturday, milder conditions will follow from the south with sleet and snow turning to rain."

While there were many parts of the country that did succumb to the wintry weather on Thursday, local authorities in Flintshire, Wales were forced to apologise when 88 schools closed over an amber weather warning - but barely any snow ended up falling until much later in the day. Flintshire County Council cabinet member for education, Mared Eastwood, told BBC Radio Wales that he recognised the "childcare difficulties that do arise for parents" as a result of the precautionary closures, he stressed that the council had been "trying to minimise the disruption".

Buxton, Derbyshire, was one of many towns and cities however that saw plenty of snow, and several inches had settled by midday. The Met Office's latest UK-wide forecast for Friday reads: "Today, there will be a continuation of the wintry showers in the far north, with a band of rain and mainly hill snow across central areas initially, but moving northwards through the day. Cloudier in the south with some showers, these locally heavy. Mild in the south, colder elsewhere.

"Tonight, rain and hill snow persist across north and east Scotland. Elsewhere, patchy and cloudy with some showers or longer spells of rain. Fog patches may develop underneath the clearest spells.

"Tomorrow will see rain and some snow persisting in the far north, mostly over higher ground. Further south there are likely to be occasional brighter interludes once any fog clears, with showers, these mostly in the west."
