Patrick Mahomes has revealed his ambitions to transition from being the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback to a future head coach in the NFL.
Mahomes, 28, has seemingly been inspired by working with Chiefs coach Andy Reid. The two-time MVP is a game away from completing his seventh professional season and sixth as Kansas City's starting quarterback, the entirety of which he has spent working with the same coach.
Reid joined the Chiefs after leaving the Philadelphia Eagles in 2012, and he has had as many as four current NFL head coaches working under him as assistants in the past. Doug Pederson (Jacksonville Jaguars), John Harbaugh (Baltimore Ravens), Sean McDermott (Buffalo Bills) and Todd Bowles (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) comprise that quartet.

In total, 11 of Reid's former assistants have become head coaches at various teams across the league over the past two decades. While Mahomes still has several years of playing ahead of him, he is not ruling out a future in coaching.
When asked about Reid's coaching tree during Super Bowl week, he responded: "I would hope so (to one day become a good coach). I try to help out all the young guys that are around the organisation - now I've kind of become the old guy even though I still feel young.
"I would hope I'd make a good coach. The hours would be tough. But I think, eventually, Jerick McKinnon would be a great coach because he knows everything."

McKinnon spent his four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and Mike Zimmer before the running back headed to the San Francisco 49ers. He had three injury-affected seasons under Kyle Shanahan, who will coach against McKinnon and his Chiefs teammates at Super Bowl LVIII.
Bell also briefly crossed paths with Shanahan in San Francisco but mainly had Jim Tomsula and Chip Kelly as a head coach after they had single seasons in charge after the departure of Harbaugh.
The tight end went on to play in Minnesota, alongside McKinnon, for Coach Zimmer. After that, he briefly played for the Dallas Cowboys under Mike McCarthy and the Jaguars, coached by Doug Marrone.
Mahomes has not had as many different coaches as his teammates. However, working with Coach Reid for several years could prove invaluable. As, too, could his multiple offensive coordinators who later went on to coach elsewhere.
Matt Nagy had the role in his rookie year before he left for the Chicago Bears, only to return after four years. Eric Bieniemy was another who might also make a comeback to the Chiefs after recently leaving the Washington Commanders.
