A well-known groom who suffered life-threatening injuries in a mystery accident needs facial surgery.
Richard ‘Sparky’ Bevis has worked as head lad for trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies for 18 years and was closely involved with the stable’s Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Imperial Commander and more recent star Bristol De Mai. He was found seriously hurt while working alone on his farm in Gloucestershire in January.
He was admitted to Southmead Hospital in Bristol with multiple skull and facial fractures and put on a ventilator. Bevis’s wife Dominique and son William launched a GoFundMe page to support his recovery which has reached more than £70,000.
In the latest update, Dominique Bevis said her husband had now been released from hospital and returned home. “William and I wanted to share with you all some special news, after 3.5 weeks at Southmead Hospital, Richard has been discharged to continue his recovery from home.," she said
“This in itself is nothing short of incredible given that he suffered a traumatic brain injury, complex and multiple facial fractures, left globe rupture and partial amputation of his left ear.

Twiston-Davies said Bevis would need to return to hospital for further surgery.
“It’s encouraging news that he is home but he still has an awful lot of operations to go. He has to have his face rebuilt because there are so many bones broken in his face. It’s going to be a long road.”
