A couple who were tired of chip shop customers queuing outside their house built a fence to block them off - but it led to one person allegedly taking aim at them with a weapon.

Stephen and Christine Williams put up the 4ft-high fence at their Alnwick home to protect their privacy, but after a row with neighbours, they took it down after just one week. The dispute escalated when a man allegedly threatened Christine, 53, with an airgun. Stephen, 60, had to pull his terrified wife inside as the man fired the weapon.

The couple, who had thought about selling their house before, decided to go ahead after a dispute. They were shocked to find the value of their home had dropped by £105,000 since they bought it, the Daily Record reported.

Christine shared: "We were going to sell the house beforehand but what's gone on has soured it a bit... [and we] brought it all forward. We took the fence down on September 24, it was up for a week. We just want to move on with it. I got trolled on Facebook. Some of the comments we saw were awful."

After an air rifle was fired at her, Christine said: "To think the guy who shot at me got away with that. I said to my husband 'that guys got a gun'. The minute he aimed at me, Stephen dragged me inside." Stephen thinks most people would have done the same in their situation to stop strangers from trespassing.

He added: "We've had people eating their chips on our windowsill and looking through the window while we are trying to relax. It's not on. Most people wouldn't want people using their land as a footpath and neither do we. We just wanted to protect our property."
