Octopus Energy has agreed to sell the broadband business of Shell Energy Retail to TalkTalk.

Last year it was confirmed that the energy firm would acquire Shell Energy Retail in the UK and Germany, which provides domestic gas, power and broadband services. The deal meant that Octopus would have nearly 6.5 million household customers in the UK. It also increased its customer base in Germany to 300,000.

According to Octopus, Shell Energy is already assisted by TalkTalk's system. Thus, switching to them guarantees an easy change for all customers involved. Octopus says this is a "priority concern" for both firms and what is "best" for customers. According to reports at the time, Octopus acquired almost 500,000 Shell broadband customers.

In a statement released this week, an Octopus Energy spokesperson said: "The migration process will begin in the coming months. For now, customers should sit tight; they will be contacted once their account is ready to move over to TalkTalk's systems. Until migration, Shell Energy Broadband customers will be looked after by the same teams as before."

With the takeover deal, Shell and Octopus decided to enhance the relationship between Electroverse, Octopus' EV charge point roaming service, and Shell Recharge stations. Greg Jackson, the boss of Octopus Energy Group, said: "We are pleased to be the new home for Shell Energy Retail customers in the UK and Germany. Now even more customers can receive our five star customer service and choose from a whole heap of cheap, green tariffs, benefitting both their pockets and the energy system."

He also mentioned in December: "Our commitment to customers is paramount, and we will deliver the Octopus promise when we welcome these new customers too."

This year, the company set a record by moving 1.5million Bulb customers in just six months, all while keeping up its top-notch customer service and winning the Which? Recommended Energy Supplier award for the sixth time.
