'King didn't have to wait for his cancer treatment - all Brits deserve the same'

Treat us all like royalty

King Charles is fortunate he wasn’t made to wait for cancer treatment, as two in every five diagnosed with the disease are. Two-fifths are forced to wait longer than the NHS two-month target for treatment to start.

Every day’s delay is emotionally agonising and physically dangerous. We hope detection of the King’s own illness will intensify pressure for cancer care to be restored to the much healthier state the Tories inherited from Labour in 2010.

The King may take some comfort in the shock diagnosis appearing to start a healing process with estranged son Harry. The Duke of Sussex flew in from the US to spend a little time with his father.

Beneath the pomp and ceremony, the Royal Family is like any other and many families know how cancer, death or a tragedy can reunite estranged members. Perhaps this new family drama will even bring Harry and his brother William closer together eventually. Only time will tell.

Must brush up

The huge queue in Bristol to register with an NHS dentist vividly illustrated the pain endured around the country. The service is in crisis and millions of us are unable to receive the prompt, affordable treatment we should be getting.

To add extra bite to our campaign to save NHS dentistry, today the Daily Mirror launches a petition demanding that everybody be guaranteed access to a local NHS dentist. Please take time to find and sign it online. With the Government’s latest “rescue” plan dismissed as toothless, either we all fight for better care or the rot will worsen.

It’s a safe bet

It was always odds-on that Rishi Sunak would try to wriggle out of criticism for accepting a tasteless bet. Of course the Prime Minister’s claim not to be a “betting person” was found to be false. This PM has as much chance of telling the truth as he has of batting for England.
