Prince Philip's nickname for Meghan Markle explained

Prince Philip, the late Duke of Edinburgh, is said to have referred to Meghan Markle as D.o.W., referring to the "Duchess of Windsor" after the American divorcee, Wallis Simpson, who married Edward VIII and supported him abdicating as King.

It has been revealed that because Meghan is American, and a divorcee, Prince Philip thought it was "uncanny" how much she reminded him of the Duchess of Windsor, with this coming to light in Ingrid Seward's book My Mother And I.

In her new book, Ingrid penned of Philip's feelings of an uncanny resemblance: "He was simply referring to the fact that both were pencil-slim, dark-haired and glamorous American divorcees."

Meghan isn't the only member of the Royal Family to be dubbed with a nickname. In fact, the Queen received the endearing nickname Lilibet from how she pronounced her own name, Elizabeth, as a child. Prince Phillip himself even had a nickname, as he was reportedly referred to as "P.P" by close friends.

The new book is full of revelations about how the Queen really felt about Meghan and Harry after they left the Royal family.

For instance, Queen Elizabeth had plenty to say about their wedding. According to the book, she reportedly commented on how Meghan's dress was "too white" for a divorcee. She also had qualms about the her son, the present king, Charles, walking Meghan down the aisle after Meghan's father Thomas was ousted from the nuptials.

The book claims she was "uncomfortable" with the decision, adding: "I asked him to and I think he knew it was coming and he immediately said, 'Yes, of course, I’ll do whatever Meghan needs and I’m here to support you," Harry recalled in the documentary Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70."

Additionally, she was hesitant about Prince Phillip walking down the aisle due to his health.

Ingrid explained: "She was also concerned about 96-year-old Prince Philip’s decision to hobble down the aisle without a stick, despite having had a hip replacement just five weeks before." Luckily, Philip seemed to be in fine form on the day.
