Tesla has recalled around 2.2 million vehicles due to incorrect warning lights, America's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced.

The vehicles include some Model S, Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3, Model Y, and 2024 Cybertruck vehicles, NHTSA said. Tesla is has made the decision to recall nearly all of its electric vehicles in the United States over the incorrect font size on car warning lights. It is Tesla's largest ever recall.

The NHTSA said: "Warning lights with a smaller font size can make critical safety information on the instrument panel difficult to read, increasing the risk of a crash." The recall alert states the firm will increases the letter font size of the brake, park and antilock brake system visual warning indicators.

It comes after the electric car manufacturer issued a recall on nearly all vehicles sold in the US over defects in the Autopilot system back in December. The recall, which affected more than two million vehicles, updated software and fix a defective system that’s supposed to ensure drivers are paying attention when using Autopilot.

The decision was made after a two-year investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration into a series of crashes that happened while the Autopilot partially automated driving system was in use. Some were deadly.

The agency says its investigation found Autopilot’s method of making sure that drivers are paying attention can be inadequate and can lead to “foreseeable misuse of the system.” The added controls and alerts will “further encourage the driver to adhere to their continuous driving responsibility,” the documents said.

Earlier this month Tesla recalled more than 1.6 million vehicles in China over issues with steering software and door-locking systems, the country's regulator says. The recall includes its models S, X, 3 and Y, and 7,538 imported vehicles.

The Chinese regulator, the State Administration for Market Regulation, said: "For vehicles within the scope of this recall, when the automatic assisted steering function is turned on, the driver may misuse the level two combined assisted driving function, increasing the risk of vehicle collision and posing a safety hazard."

Last month, a judge said Musk must give up a compensation package awarded by Tesla’s board of directors that is potentially worth more than $55 billion. The ruling in a Delaware court comes five years after a shareholder lawsuit targeted Tesla CEO Musk and the directors. They were accused of breaching their duties to the electric vehicle and solar panel manufacturer, resulting in a waste of corporate assets and unjust enrichment for Musk.

The plaintiff’s lawyers argued that the pay package was dictated by Musk and was the product of sham negotiations with directors who were not independent of him. Defence attorneys said the pay plan was fairly negotiated by a committee of independent directors, contained lofty performance milestones, and was blessed by a shareholder vote that was not even required.
