Aaron Rodgers has been left red-faced as his recent comments about the New York Jets being on the brink of a Super Bowl run now seem unlikely.

This comes after a report from The Athletic, citing around 30 sources, suggesting that the team is in deep trouble.

Rodgers' season was cut short by an Achilles injury, which happened just four snaps into his debut. Since then, the Jets have struggled both on and off the field. One source described the team as being in 'such a f***ing mess', while others pointed fingers at head coach Robert Saleh and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett for their lack of impact and authority.

The report also suggested that Rodgers acted as an 'unofficial general manager', having some control over the team's moves throughout the year and leading multiple meetings.

There's been a lot of buzz about the Jets since they hired Hackett - who happens to be good mates with Rodgers. Adding more fuel to the fire, the team secured Allen Lazard with a hefty contract deal though he hasn't really proved his worth yet. Another familiar face for Rodgers, Randall Cobb was signed on too - both Cobb and Lazard being top picks from his Green Bay Packers days.

Meanwhile, head coach Saleh is accused of being overly concerned with negative press. And despite publicly supporting backup QB Zach Wilson, he's rumoured to have blamed Rodgers' substitute for the Jets' difficulties to others within the team.

All this chatter comes hot on the heels of Rodgers mentioning to reporters that the Jets could well compete for a Super Bowl soon. Trying to keep everyone inspired, he said: "We need a couple of more pieces ... but we're close."

Even though the Jets wrapped up their season with a 7-10 tally, it's anticipated that Rodgers will play for them again next year. No doubt, fingers are crossed that both Saleh and Hackett will get rid of the thorns in their sides for coming seasons.

As dust settles on this year's season, the Jets have got to pull their socks up to improve the roster, especially given the tight budget as they gear up for their next round in 2023.
