Walmart has announced its plans to open 150 new stores to "reach and serve even more customers". The supermarket giant also aims to remodel 650 stores across 47 states and Puerto Rico – creating tens of thousands of jobs supporting these projects - within the next 12 months.

Its first two new stores in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, and Atlanta, Georgia are set to open in spring - with a full list of locations expected at a later date. A Walmart statement reads: "When it comes to investing in America, Walmart has a very strong history. We directly employ approximately 1.6 million people in this country and support many more jobs beyond that.

"Today, I’m proud to announce our support for even more jobs by expanding and modernizing the facilities most core to our business: our stores. In the next five years, Walmart is planning to build or convert more than 150 stores, while simultaneously continuing our program to remodel existing stores.

"These efforts represent millions of dollars in capital investment of labor, supplies and tax revenue, which benefit their respective communities. And they’ll help us reach and serve even more customers." The new and remodeled stores will reflect Walmart's Store of the Future concept, featuring improved layouts, expanded product selections and innovative technology.

Its new facilities are being designed with sustainability in mind, including more energy-efficient equipment and lighting, and lower-impact refrigerants. The statement adds: "Customers love this concept in the places we’ve already rolled it out, and we’re excited to transition more and more of our fleet.

"We’re also working on developing a coast-to-coast network of affordable electric vehicle fast-charging stations we hope will make EV ownership a more convenient and accessible choice for Walmart shoppers and associates. "These new and remodeled stores will better enable us to meet and exceed customer expectations whether in a store, online at Walmart.com, or through one of our mobile apps.

"We’re proud that improving our stores also has a tangible impact on the communities we serve. What a win it is to invest in America, grow our business, and move toward a more sustainable future – all at the same time." Alongside its new and remodeled stores, Walmart is currently finalising construction plans on 12 new projects we intend to start this year, along with converting one of our smaller locations to a Walmart Supercenter.
