Bethesda’s space Sci-Fi epic is kicking off the year with a bang, applying a grand suite of improvements and changes across all platforms.

It’s been a little quiet on the Starfield front as of late. Despite the Starfield Shattered Space DLC likely targeting a 2024 release and Bethesda promising continued updates, players of the Sci-Fi RPG have only had New Game Plus to keep themselves busy. The studio remains schtum with regards to any forthcoming expansions or DLC, but has kicked off 2024 in style by detailing the large changes being brought by update 1.9.51.0 as detailed in the latest round of Starfield patch notes.

As detailed in a blog post found over on Bethesda’s official site, update 1.9.51.0 introduces a sweeping number of improvements and fixes – easily marking the most changes to come in both the Xbox and PC versions of the game yet. The focus is mainly on several quality-of-life improvements, such as preventing aliens on certain planets staying invisible, adjusting how NPCs behave in large crowds behave, and so on.

The biggest change update 1.9.51.0 applies, however, is the drastically improved lighting, which will result in “improved eyes and skin” on NPCs, better reflections in water, and shadows being made visible on planets with rings. A particularly big crash bug on the PC version has also been stamped out by the update, one that would “occur when changing from Fullscreen to Windowed mode”. Now Steam and Microsoft Store players can explore and live out their Sci-Fi fantasies in safety.

This is the same patch made available to PC players via beta testing on Steam just two weeks ago. Players playing on Xbox Series X will be able to enjoy 1.9.51.0’s various improvements for the first time from now onwards, then, as can he wider PC player base.
