Antiques Road Trip £8 statue fetches thousands in 'history-making' episode

Antiques Road Trip has been entertaining BBC viewers since 2010 and sees experts on a budget compete against each other to buy collectibles which they later sell for a profit at auction.

Long-time fans of the show will remember one particular history-making moment back in 2012, where Charlie Ross' bargain £8 damaged Staffordshire elephant statue was sold for thousands.

During the episode, Charlie and James Braxton, who had been given a small budget of £200 to source antiques, were left stunned when the damaged clock attracted serious attention online at their first auction in Buckie, Scotland.

During the episode, a voiceover said at the time: "With one lot each still to go, Charlie is only £7 ahead, next up it's his Staffordshire elephant and the auctioneer thinks it could go for a couple of hundred!" It wasn't long until the £8 bargain started jumping into the hundreds region, with phone and internet bids dominating the room.

As the price continued to soar, experts Charlie and James couldn't hide their shock, exclaiming: "Sorry, are you hearing this? This is ridiculous!" As the auctioneer read out a new bid of £2,100, the voiceover said: "Unheard of on the Road Trip!" In the end, the item sold for a staggering £2,700 with the experts admitting they only thought it would fetch for a "few hundred quid".

And it wasn't just the experts left speechless at the eye-watering profit, with the voiceover excitedly declaring at the time: "Never in the history of the Road Trip have we ever had a sale like that, what an amazing result Charlie!" At the time, viewers were quick to react to the scenes.

Elephant has trunked over £2k. Never be4 on show."

Yet this isn't the only memorable sale on the show as viewers experienced a series first back in 2021 after an item host Paul Laidlaw spotted sold for £20,000. Antiques expert Paul picked up the rare camera for just £60 in an antique store in Margate, Kent, whilst shopping for collectables.

It wasn't long after Paul arrived at the Bury St Edmonds auction in Suffolk that the rare item caught Edward Crichton's eye as he revealed he'd "never seen one" before. The bidding started at a staggering £1,000 and quickly increased in steps of thousands of pounds. The price continued to fly until the auctioneer closed the hammer saying: "At £20,000 online, at £20,000 if we’re all done, £20,000."
