Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney may be about to eat his own words as he plots an audacious swoop on old foes Notts County for former rival Macaulay Langstaff.
The Red Dragons were locked in a tense battle for automatic promotion with County last season as they fought it out for a place in League Two. Eventually, however, both teams gained their place back in the EFL after a hard fought campaign, with Wrexham winning the National League and their perennial rivals finishing runners up.
Both teams have made bright starts to the season in the fourth tier too, with Wrexham currently second in the standings, while County currently occupy sixth place. Now, it appears that the North Wales outfit's Hollywood owners are readying a raid of their nemeses for free-scoring attacker Langstaff.
That is according to HITC, who claim that Dragons chairmen Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have designs on signing the 26-year-old forward in January. The striker set the all-time record for the most goals in a National League season last term with a staggering 42 strikes in 40 outings.

The marksman has continued his prolific form so far this season as well, scoring an impressive 20 goals in 27 games so far in League Two. As per the report, he would command a fee in the region of £1.5million, with Peterborough United, Birmingham City, Sunderland and Derby County also among the clubs interested in his services.
Wrexham owners may have some explaining to do over some typically tongue-in-cheek remarks made on the 'Welcome to Wrexham' documentary at the height of the club's rivalry with Langstaff's current employers. McElhenney commented: "Macaulay Langstaff, he can f*** off," before Reynolds added: "Yeah, god that guy is good. He's handsome as f***. He looks like he could be in Peaky Blinders."
Whether the prolific forward will take these comments in good humour remains to be seen but any deal between the two clubs would likely fan the flames of this modern rivalry once again. As yet, Wrexham are yet to make a purchase in the January window, however, with their sole business being new contracts for Paul Mullin and Elliot Lee.

Forward Macaulay Langstaff has made another prolific start to the season for Notts County in League 2Addressing the prospect of more business this winter, Wrexham head coach Phil Parkinson admitted that work is being done behind the scenes but there are no guarantees that any deals will be completed. He confessed to The Athletic: "There are a lot of enquiries going on but, equally, we have some good players ready to make a big contribution.
"If there is a player out there who we feel can improve us, we will make a move. We are always looking. It can be a bit of a game of poker, as this is a competitive business when you’re trying to sign players. I keep getting told there’s no money in football. But, when we try to sign players, we keep getting told they don’t need the money so don’t need to sell. It can be hard to wrestle players away."
Previously he told The Leader: "I don't want to make any predictions for January - in terms of incoming players. We have got a strong squad, but we are always looking. As our supporters know, we are always striving to improve, and we are assessing a lot of situations at the moment, but we are keeping our cards close to our chest."
