A mum was left in tears after her handbag zip got wedged in her nose in a freak accident before trying to remove it with metal cutters.
Kayla Robinson was trying to put her bag over her head when the zip got stuck under her right nostril. The 41-year-old ended up bleeding and in lots of pain, which made her go to a clinic where doctors had to cut the bag off her nose. Kayla runs Slay Beauty Rooms in Winlaton, near Newcastle. She was about to walk her three French Bulldogs with her cousin Jade Skollin, 38, when the incident occurred.
Kayla said: "I was putting them in the boot like I normally do and Ralphie jumped over the boot, through to the passenger seat. He had me all up a height. I lifted my bag up to take it over my head. The next thing I know my bag was stuck. It was wedged in my right nostril. I said to Jade 'My bag is stuck to my face'."
At first, Kayla thought her bag, a present from her daughter, was caught on her nose ring, but then she saw it was really hooked onto her nostril. She said: "There was quite a bit of blood. Jade just looked at me and burst out laughing. She was crying with laughter and I was crying with pain. My dogs were devastated they weren't getting taken for a walk anymore."
"I was crying my eyes out. I was panicking because I really thought that it had come through the front of my nose. I thought I was going to have a huge gaping hole in my nose and it was going to need plastic surgery. I went inside the house to get some metal cutters. We tried to remove it with this metal cutters before she said to me: 'I'm going to have to take you to the walk-in centre'."
Baby boy has spent his life in hospital as doctors are 'scared' to discharge himKayla told ChronicleLive how everyone at the walk-in centre couldn't believe what had happened to her. But she had work later that day and was set on making it to the salon for her clients. She continued: "I had to carry the bag because it was so heavy, I had to keep it upright. I went to the reception and I said 'My bag is stuck to my nose'. She said: "Sorry what did you say?""
"I said 'My bag's stuck up my nose, I've had a freak accident'. She said 'I thought there was something wrong with your mouth and that's why you were hiding it. Everyone in the waiting room found it funny. People were staring and trying not to laugh. I wasn't there long, maybe 10 to 15 minutes, but by then the pain was really bad and my nose was starting to swell."
Kayla shared that doctors had to cut off the rest of her bag, leaving only the zip slider attached to her nose. She was given gas and air to ease the pain as they removed the zip from her nostril. "They move it around and pulled it off. As I had gas and air it wasn't in lots of pain and the relief when it came off was unbelievable. It was like my nose had cried with happiness. My nose is still sore and I've got a big gash up it. I keep forgetting about it and itching my nose all the time." she said.
Despite the ordeal, Kayla, who shared her story on TikTok, can now laugh about it. "It's just hilarious, I'm always going to be known as the bag lady around here now," she joked. "Everyone at work was absolutely creased laughing. I went into the local sandwich shop and everyone burst out laughing when I walked in. People say 'Are you not even bothered?' It's just another thing that happens to me all the time. This is my daily life, it's just a disaster. I tried to take my dogs for a walk to clear my head but I couldn't even do that."
She also mentioned that River Island reached out to her on TikTok to offer her a new bag and a voucher.
