After a persistent issue plaguing the Xbox version of Baldur's Gate 3 for the better part of two months, a new firmware update is being released to consoles from today onwards in the hopes it'll finally be resolved.

Baldur's Gate 3 players who game on Xbox will know that the title has been facing a consistent save issue for months now. After coming out on Xbox Series X|S months after its initial release on PC and PS5, you'd think there'd have been enough time to iron out bugs for the title, but this just hasn't been the case, with issues surrounding progression and saves being at the forefront.

Since its launch on Xbox, some players have had their Baldur's Gate 3 saves disappearing. With multiple awkward hotfixes put out that haven't resolved the problem, we finally saw Larian Studios announce last week that Microsoft has identified the cause of the issue and will be releasing a firmware update to repair it.

We're now finally seeing the update roll out after confirmation from @XboxSupport over on Twitter, with players being able to manually update their console as of last night. The update will be automatically applied to everyone else within the next week.

Regardless of whether or not you own or play Baldur's Gate 3, this update is being applied at a firmware level, and so will apply to all Xbox consoles. It might be worth holding onto any remaining scepticism, though, considering Xbox had released an update to fix this issue back in early December, but still it persisted.

Bald moves ahead

As someone who's only dabbled in Baldur's Gate 3 in both its PC and PS5 iterations, it's incredibly exciting to hear that this save issue on Xbox looks to be getting well and truly stamped out for good. Players with an Xbox Series X remained extremely patient throughout the latter half of 2023, waiting for Larian's magnum opus to be released on their preferred platform. What should have been a riotous celebration of this announcement at The Game Awards, however, has been consistently soured ever since.

Obviously, we don't know whether this newest Xbox firmware update has worked until Baldur's Gate 3 players continue to play, as even Larian Studios admitted that it hadn't been "able to independently verify this fix" itself, despite Microsoft's insistence that it'll work. It's the latest in a handful of Xbox-related issues, which also most recently saw the platform banning players for capturing saucy scenes. That issue has since been resolved, so here's hoping the same is true for this save-related one.
