Schools across Scotland are closed today as the country has been hit by an Arctic blast of ice and snow.
Today is the second of five consecutive days in which Scotland has been issued with at least one yellow weather warning for snow or ice or both. Widespread disruption is likely, the Met Office says, including the risk of injury by falling or slipping on icy surfaces.
Travel disruption is also feared as rail services may be cancelled and roads will be covered in snow, especially in rural communities, which could cause vehicles and passengers to become stranded. With these risks in mind, authorities across Scotland have today closed schools.
More than 50 schools in Aberdeenshire have been forced to shut their doors for the day. Others in the council area, and elsewhere in Scotland, have had their opening times delayed.
Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Chris Bulmer said: "Snow showers from Sunday onwards are most likely to move inland from coasts exposed to northerly winds. The focus of snow showers will be over northern Scotland, but parts of the North Sea and Irish Sea coasts may also see some snow at times."
