A man showed how his 'ingenious' train gate hack instantly fooled a new half-a-million pound 'fare-dodge' system.

The clever New Yorker has found a way to dodge the new £500,000 subway gates installed by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The trick was shared on TikTok by a user named kiingspiidertv and showed a man in a yellow hoodie approaching the new gates at the Sutphin Boulevard-Archer Avenue station in Jamaica, Queens.

He leans over the paddles of a neighbouring gate and waves his hand over the exit sensor. The glass gates open instantly, and he strolls right through, even passing a group of police officers standing just a few metres away. Other users have piggybacked off the post, showing that this 'emergency exit' stays open for five full seconds, giving others plenty of time to enter one after the other.

Some people have reported seeing a lot of this at the Queens station, which is the first to have these new gates installed. "One person will pay and three will go through," an MTA employee at the station told The New York Post.

"Or someone goes through with a stroller and the others just walk through. When I see them, I say, 'No, you gotta pay. I don't let them through", they added.

The 8th Avenue-Penn Station A/C/E is set to be the second station to receive a new setup, costing around $700,000 per station, as reported by the Post. "I don't think I've seen technology that's perfect in any city, frankly," said Rich Davey, the MTA's top executive for the city subway and bus systems, during the system's Dec. 4 unveiling.

"But this is obviously going a long way to improving our current turnstile system." The existing gates, which are decades old, are easy to jump over or duck under, leading to New Yorkers becoming known for their fare evasion tactics.

The current decades-old gates are extremely easy to jump over or duck under, and with yearly fare hikes, New Yorkers have become known for their fare evasion tactics.

The MTA could see more hot water soon as federal transit safety investigators said they will be reviewing all of New York City’s subway operations in response to a collision and derailment that caused minor injuries to more than 20 people last week, the chairperson of the National Transportation Safety Board said Friday.
