Evri driver suspended after delivery lorry gets stuck on city's steepest street

The driver of an Evri lorry that got stuck on Bristol's steepest street has been suspended while the company carries out an investigation.

The Hermes vehicle, which has since rebranded to Evri, blocked Vale Street in Bristol today (January 9) after it got wedged against the Tarmac. Pictures and footage from the scene show the lorry at the bottom of the steep hill, blocking the road to other motorists.

A spokesperson for Evri said the driver has been suspended and the vehicle is due to be removed. Recovery of the stricken lorry was well underway by 5pm today and completed by 6.30pm. In a full statement, an Evri spokesperson told BristolLive: "The safety of our people and communities around us is a top priority, the driver has been suspended while we investigate what has happened."

The incident happened at the junction of Park Street and Vale Street - the latter being Bristol's and the UK's steepest street with an incline of 22 degrees. Bristol Live has previously been told the street's gradient is so sharp that, during the winter, some cars have to be tied to lampposts to prevent them from sliding down the hill when the road surface is icy. It is used for Easter egg rolling competitions in spring.
