A couple claim they've saved money by swapping the UK for Egypt for a month.

Brenda and John Stewart-Davis are two Brits who decided to leave the UK's rainy shores this winter and head somewhere a little warmer.

The retired couple from Kent opted for a resort on Egypt's Red Sea, where the temperature remains in the mid-20s for December and January.

They had seen an advert from easyJet Holidays which was trying to tempt Brits to the northeast African country with the promise that it'd be cheaper than staying in the UK, reports the Independent.

The promotion argued that the current state of inflation and high energy prices meant four weeks in Egypt at £650 per person would be cheaper than staying in the UK.

Brenda and John took the plunge and booked into the Stella Gardens resort, and say it's been "cheaper" to be abroad.

The couple switched their heating off, which was a major saving for them as they spend a lot of their time indoors when at home.

"Now we’re sitting without coats on in flip-flops," Brenda added.

The duo managed to bag one of the easyJet deals which included flights with luggage from Luton, Gatwick, Manchester or Bristol, as well as transfers from the airport and all-inclusive accommodation at a resort rated five stars.

It is not clear how many holidays were sold for the advertised price.

As the deal comes with unlimited drinks the only extra money the couple have had to factor in is for tips.

They are not spending the roughly £200 a week on food and drink they fork out for at home, and have no transport costs.

One breakdown of average outgoings estimates that each person will spend £939 a month on accommodation, gas and electric, water, food and alcohol, and other basics such as travel while in the UK.

Egypt is not the only country with a tourism sector that has been trying to tempt Brits over the winter.

Greece’s tourism minister Vassilis Kikilias has pitched his country to Brits as the cost of living crisis continues to bite, and the Christmas cold forces energy bills higher.

“Our doors are open 12 months round, our friends in northern Europe should know this. They should head here for the winter," he told the Observer.

The Greek government is soon to roll out a £17.5million advertising campaign to people across Europe.

It will feature the tagline: “Wanna feel 20 again? With warm winter temperatures up to 20C, Greece is the place to be.”
