As comedian Jo Koy took the stage for the 81st annual Golden Globe Awards viewers tore apart his opening monologue calling his jokes "cringe" and "unbearable to watch".

The American stand-up comedian hosted the awards for the first time ever after a successful three decades working in stand up comedy. Jo previously starred in stand-up comedy specials on Netflix and Comedy Central. It's reported a total of five other comedians turned down the offer to host before Jo stepped in to save the day. But Jo was met with a string of hate following his opening introduction at the prestigious awards.

Viewers took to X, formerly Twitter, bashing the comedian for his safe jokes that they felt didn't land. One viewer wrote: "Right, please do not let Jo Koy back on that stage or this is going to be unbearable. Take out a restraining order if necessary." Another agreed: "Not a very strong monologue by Jo Koy - actually the worst I’ve ever seen - maybe the Golden Globes should pick a host more than 2 weeks before the awards air next time?" And a third added: "Jo Koy’s veneers are blinding me and his jokes are boring me. It’s giving 2012 comedy."

Despite the haters, some of Jo's devoted fans stood by his side and were thrilled to see him hosting a major award show. One fan raved: "I love this #GoldenGlobes opening because Jo Koy isn't doing any corny bulls**t, he wrote a regular a** stand-up set and then wrote some random celebrity jokes, I like that." Another wrote: "I freaking love Jo Koy his comedy specials are GOLD #GoldenGlobes." And a third praised: "I like that Jo Koy is hitting all the best Shows and Films. No stone left unturned or joke unsaid."

British comic Ricky Gervais was undoubtedly the ceremony's most famous ever presenter, taking to the hosting helm in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2020.

Ricky's controversial opening monologues included jokes about Leonardo DiCaprio's penchant for younger women, Jeffrey Epstein's private island and Caitlyn Jenner's 2015 car crash that resulted in the death of another driver.

The Office star is currently basking in the success of his latest Netflix comedy special Armageddon, which peaked at number one in 10 countries. Following the success of the show, he took to Twitter to joke that he and fellow controversial comedian Dave Chappelle, who has also had major success with Netflix special, The Dreamer, should perhaps hosts the Oscars together.
