A woman has been rushed to hospital with serious burns following a house fire, after which a man has been arrested.

The victim was rescued from the property by firefighters and dashed to hospital for treatment to her burns. The blaze happened at around 11.15am in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent.

The fire, which was extinguished by around 2pm, is being treated as deliberate and Staffordshire Police says a 47-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson. The suspect, who is from Stoke-on-Trent, remains in custody for questioning.

Roads were closed in the residential community today to allow for the large-scale response from emergency services. Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service sent three vehicles to the blaze, it is thought.

One man, who appears to live on the road in the east of Stoke-on-Trent, posted on Facebook: "House fire... three fire appliances, an ambulance plus doctors in a 4x4, and numerous police. It started just after 11am approximately."

Responding to well-wishers asking for his safety, the man said he and his family couldn't drive down his road. He added: "It appears police have arrested a bloke at the scene and a woman is in hospital with serious burns. The police cordon has been lifted but we've still got one fire appliance on scene and workmen have just turned up to secure building, suppose they're the gas board."

Police are appealing for any information as they continue to investigate the house fire. A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: "We are appealing for information about a house fire in Hanley this morning (6 January). We were called to a report of a house fire at Eagle Street, Hanley at around 11:15am.

"Firefighters rescued one woman from the property who was taken to hospital with serious burns. The fire has now been extinguished. We are currently treating the fire as deliberate and detectives from CID have begun an investigation. A 47-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent has been arrested on suspicion of arson. He remains in custody for questioning.

"Anyone with information about this incident should contact us via Live Chat on our website quoting incident number 201 of 6 January. Alternatively, for guaranteed anonymity, contact Crimestoppers." West Midlands Ambulance Service has been approached for comment.
