Elvis Presley will return to the stage - 47 years after his death - for an immersive concert experience.

The iconic star will be brought back to life through the power of AI with the brand new show Elvis Evolution, which will feature holographic projections of the singer created from a collection of personal photos and home-video footage.

Elvis Evolution will open in London in November later this year before moving to Las Vegas, Berlin and Tokyo. It follows the hugely successful Abba Voyage, a virtual immersive concert with avatars of the Swedish pop band as their human counterparts appeared in 1979.

The global rights for the brand new experience have been secured by British immersive entertainment specialists Layered Reality, who have previously produced immersive experiences such as The Gunpowder Plot and The War of the Worlds.

Andrew McGuinness, founder and chief executive of Layered Reality, said: "Elvis Evolution is a next-generation tribute to the musical legend that is Elvis Presley. Elvis maintains superstar status globally and people around the world no longer want to sit there and passively receive entertainment - they want to be a part of it."

He added: "It'll be a memory-making experience that will be a bucket-list item for Elvis fans and admirers around the world. People can step into the world of Elvis, walk in his shoes and celebrate his extraordinary musical legacy."

Marc Rosen, president of entertainment at Authentic Brands Group, which owns Elvis Presley Enterprises, said: "We're thrilled to partner with Layered Reality to give fans a new, immersive way of experiencing Elvis Presley's life and legacy."

The news comes ahead of what would have been the singer's 89th birthday on 8 January. Elvis was nominated for 14 Grammy Awards during his career, including three wins and sold more than one billion records worldwide.

He also received the Grammy lifetime achievement award. The icon starred in 33 films and made numerous television appearances. Elvis died, aged 42, on 16 August 1977 at his Graceland home in Memphis, Tennessee.

Rock legends Kiss have also recently been immortalised as digital superhero-style avatars. The US rock band will live on after playing their final live gig in New York.

Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer, performed in December last year in the city's Madison Square Garden before unveiling their new digital avatars on stage. Named Demon, the Starchild, Catman, and Spaceman, the holographic stars have been created with motion capture technology by Industrial Light & Magic, and Swedish firm Pophouse Entertainment which worked on the avatars used in the Abba Voyage shows in London.
