Netflix viewers have been left shocked and heartbroken after seeing the disgraceful treatment of teenagers at a camp in a highly disturbing new documentary.

Hell Camp: Teen Nightmare tells the harrowing true story of a 63-day 'wilderness therapy camp' and the man who founded it. Directed by Liza Williams, the 90-minute film delves into The Challenger Foundation, established in the 1980s and led by former military special forces officer Steve Cartisano.

He charged parents $16,000 in an effort to 'tame' their wayward teens using all manner of questionable tactics - including allegedly taking away their rations, tying them to trees and forcing them to carry bags of manure. As if that wasn't bad enough, adolescents at the camp also faced gruelling, excessively long hikes in the Utah desert - with one teenager dying during a 500-mile trek in high heat.

The program would, with parents’ consent, surprise misbehaving teens at their homes in the dead of night and take them to the wilderness camp in Southern Utah. Many viewers couldn't believe what they were watching, with many taking to social media to voice their outrage.

'How a parent could do that to their own child is disgusting'

Koda: "Hell Camp on Netflix broke my heart. How a parent could do that to their own child is disgusting."

Chelsea: "Watching the Hell Camp documentary on Netflix right now and to say I am filled with absolute RAGE over these people who abused these kids is an understatement. MOST of the time if your kids are 'misbehaving' it is your fault as a parent."

Audrey Renee Bentley: "I am absolutely appalled by the fact that parents are still to this day sending children to these Wilderness “Therapy” Camps."

Iolanda: "Having children is a responsibility that not everyone is prepared for. It's hard and difficult but, for me, it's the best job in the world. It is really disgusting and a shame to see parents who sent their children to #HellCamp #HellCampNetflix"

Sissy Curto: "Oh my gosh the Netflix doc “Hell Camp” is scary. The poor teens whose parents signed away their parental rights to a 'camp' for troubled teens."

NuclearStealthTaco: "The amount of people justifying their horrible actions/mindsets when working with 'troubled teens' is disheartening."

Ty: "Hell Camp on Netflix is a crazy doc".
