Chelsea boss Pochettino sends "crazy" warning to Boehly ahead of transfer window

Mauricio Pochettino has warned it would be “crazy” not to involve him in transfer decisions in January.

Chelsea have spent in excess of £1billion under Todd Boehly’s ownership but the squad still needs major surgery in January with the team languishing in mid-table. They want a new striker and yet reinforcements are likely only to be made if they can balance the books and Pochettino wants a say on incomings and outgoings.

Chelsea boss Pochettino said: “It’s obvious that the head coach, coach or manager is crazy to think he won’t be involved in any decisions for the future in my area. Of course we will share with the owners, the sporting director and I cannot conceive the idea of not being involved.

“It’s not only my advice it is about how we are sharing with the owners and the sporting directors. There is very good communication, we talk every single day and we will take decisions because we are all agreed.

"For me, it is more about being consistent that is the challenge. With the players that we have we can have a very good season but we need to improve.

“We were talking about the starting XI of Chelsea being the youngest ever against Crystal Palace and that is a thing that only with time we can turn in a good result with a very positive way to play.

“There is talent but that is not enough. It is also about mentality, experience together and with time we will arrive at the level where we can compete for big things.

“If we need to change something to improve of course we are more than open. We are very analytical and we always analyse ourselves to help the team is the best way possible.”

Pochettino has thrown his support behind striker Nicolas Jackson who has been hit and miss since his £30m move to Chelsea. Senegal International Jackson will go to the Africa Cup of Nations next month and has scored seven goals in the Premier League but has also missed big chances.

Pochettino said: “We need to believe in him and give him time and it was nice that when he missed the chances the fans were very supportive. They appreciated him and the team. Only with time will he relax and score. Already he is scoring.

“We will check with history to see if a striker or offensive player arrived from a different club out of England and if they performed in their first season.‌

“We are not months in and we wonder if he scores goals like Drogba or Hasselbaink. He came from Spain where he wasn’t playing too much and is a very good prospect.

“The pressure here is to touch the ball and do something fantastic. Little by little we will be more consistent and grow, be more mature and our experience will make us better.”‌

Meanwhile, Pochettino insists that he is relishing Saturday’s lunchtime trip to Kenilworth Road as not brings out the romantic in him who loves famous old stadiums.

Pochettino, who is promising the players a day off for New Year if they win at Luton, added: “Yes, because I am an old man, I am romantic. I love the football of the past and this type of stadium makes you remember when I start to play, you know, the old Wembley.

“A stadium that smells different. They’re maybe not luxury in the way that we recognise luxury today but these types of stadiums, I think you love to be there because of its history.

“They are completely different. Today we are living with a million dollar stadium but if you go there and you feel the real football.”
