Forget the Starfield sale – grab an even better sci-fi RPG for less than £20

Obsidian's The Outer Worlds is currently on sale on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation along with all of its DLC, and even though Starfield is seeing a price drop as well, it's not as generous and – let's be honest – no one's interested.

Starfield has had a hell of a release window, with Bethesda fans drumming up hype in the run-up to the launch only to be presented with a steaming pile of disappointment. It wasn't No Man's Sky bad – Bethesda would've really had to have scuppered things up to rival that unmitigated disaster – but it didn't meet the expectations that the developer itself had set out.

Currently Starfield Steam reviews are sitting at 'Mostly Negative' in terms of the most recent 7.5k ratings, with overall 'Mixed' based on all 87.4k reviews. It's a sorry state of affairs that not even the Steam Winter Sale can remedy with 30% off the usual price, bringing it down to £41.99 / $48.99 / AU$83.96. The Microsoft Store is also getting in on the action, with the same 30% discount that sees the Starfield price tag drop to £48.99 / $48.99 / AU$83.96. And you can pick up the Starfield Premium Edition at a discount if you want to throw more good money after bad.

Now try the rest

But while we wait for Bethesda to get its act together and roll out content and updates that should've been present at launch, you can opt to spend less money on an even better game. The Outer Worlds may not be as new and shiny as Starfield, but since its 2019 release, it's had a ream of DLC and has wracked up almost 21k 'Very Positive' Steam reviews. And no wonder – it comes from Obsidian Entertainment, the studio responsible for Fallout New Vegas, which is the best first-person Fallout game to date.

The game was free for 24 hours over on the Epic Games Store on Christmas day, but is still discounted right now. You can pick up the standard version of The Outer Worlds for 34% off on Steam and the Epic Games Store, bringing the price down to just £16.49 / $19.79 / AU$29.66. The DLC and expansion pass are also seeing hefty discounts of up to 50% off, and it's not just limited to PC players either.

The Outer Worlds has the same discount on the PlayStation Store and is also on sale over on the Microsoft Store – although the DLC doesn't have a price cut for Xbox players. That being said, both Starfield and The Outer Worlds are available on Xbox Game Pass so if you have a subscription, you can play both for the cost of your monthly membership for as long as they're on the service.

If you're looking for something to while away the hours between now and the New Year, The Outer Worlds and its slew of content is a good a way as any, and might scratch the itch that Starfield left unattended.
