Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds sent a cheeky message to James McClean after his winning goal for Wrexham on Boxing Day.

The Red Dragons recorded a 1-0 win away at Swindon Town on Tuesday thanks to a goal from McClean. The Republic of Ireland international scored in the 13th minute to secure the three points for Wrexham.

The victory for the Welsh club moved Phil Parkinson's outfit up to second in the League Two table and in the automatic promotion places. Wrexham now stand four points behind leaders Stockport County with a game in hand.

Reynolds, who completed a takeover of Wrexham alongside Rob McElhenney in February 2021, posted a message on Instagram after the club's win on Boxing Day.

On his Instagram story, Reynolds posted a photo of McClean celebrating his winning goal. The post was accompanied by a caption that read: "Who is this gutsy young striker we've signed out of [Republic of Ireland emoji]?"

McClean joined Wrexham in the summer in a deal that was reportedly worth £250,000 from League One club Wigan Athletic. The 34-year-old has now scored two goals in his 21 appearances for Wrexham since his move to the Welsh club and recently retired from international duty with the Republic of Ireland.

Despite taking an early lead, Wrexham could not double their advantage at the Country Ground and were left holding on to a one-goal lead for the majority of the contest. McClean explained how he and his teammates overcame a difficult test on the road against Swindon, but acknowledged that more goals would have been helpful.

"It was a game that, truth be told, we probably should have wrapped it up," McClean told Wrexham's club media. "When [it's] late on away from home with a one-goal lead, you run the risk of sometimes having your backs against the wall, and they [Swindon] fight until the end and that was the case.

"Overall, another three points on the board, another win away from home, and a good start to the Christmas period."

Wrexham also played the latter stages of the game with 10 players, after James Jones was sent off in the 74th minute. Parkinson's team still managed to hold on for their ninth clean sheet of the League Two campaign.

Next up for Wrexham is another away game on Friday night, this time against Walsall. That will be the club's final game of 2023, with a return to the Racecourse Ground on New Year's Day against fellow promotion hopefuls Barrow.
