Two women have been killed and a baby left injured in a horror car crash.

Four other people, including a baby, were also hurt in the collision between an MG and a BMW 4 Series in Shard End, Birmingham on Boxing Day.

Two women, one in her 40s and the other in her 70s, died at the scene. The BMW driver left the scene, and a man was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He is currently receiving treatment in hospital and will be spoken to by police when he is well enough to do so, police said. Another man has been arrested for assisting an offender, and is currently in custody for questioning.

The injuries to the four people injured, including the child, are not thought to be life-threatening. A statement from West Midlands Police said: "Our thoughts are with their family and friends at this devastating time and we’ll be offering as much support as we can. Four other people – including a young child – were taken to hospital with injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

"The driver of the BMW left the scene but a short time later a man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He is currently in hospital and will be spoken to when deemed medically fit to be questioned. Another man has also been arrested for assisting an offender and is currently in custody for questioning. The quad bike also left the scene and we’re carrying out enquiries to identify and trace the rider."

Det Sgt Julie Lyman, from our serious collision investigation unit, said: "Our thoughts remain with the families who have been affected by this awful collision. It remains vital that we fully establish exactly what happened with all the vehicles involved, so I’d ask the rider of the quad bike to get in touch as I believe you are a key witness to the tragic events which have occurred."
