Weddings can be an expensive affair, and everyone will have their own personal limit on how much they're able to spend. If you're fortunate, the happy couple will take this into account, but not everybody will be quite so understanding. One bridesmaid has now incurred the wrath of her soon-to-be-wed best friend, after telling her she didn't want to spend £6,600 ($8,000) on attending her 'dream' destination wedding.

According to this 35-year-old woman, her best friend announced her engagement at the end of last year, with the big day planned for November. She was initially thrilled but then learned her pal wanted to have a destination wedding.

Taking to Reddit, where she goes by the username u/Willing_Bee1128, the bridesmaid explained that the total combined costs of airfare, hotels, food, transportation, and other such expenses will set her and her spouse back around £6,600 ($8,000).

At other times of the year, the cost of this exact same trip would work out at approximately £2,465 to £3,288 ($3,000 to $4,000), however, her pal has her heart set on these particular dates.

She recalled: "In my mind, it isn't worth spending that much money but I had promised her I'd be at her wedding before I knew what she had chosen.

"I told her it was too much money and now she's upset with me because I'm saying that 'our friendship isn't worth it' and that as her best friend, I'm not supporting her to make her dream wedding come true. For context, for my wedding, she only had to pay for her shoes, which were about £61 ($75). I bought everything else including her bridesmaid dress."

The conflicted bridesmaid is now wondering whether she has let her friend down by not wanting to pay such a large sum, and has reached out to fellow Reddit users for advice.

One person commented: "By establishing a destination wedding your best friend is assuming the risk that some people will be unable to attend due to the inconvenience, financial or otherwise.

"Sounds like your best friend will need to consider whether her dream wedding revolves around the venue or the attendants."

Another wrote: "It's not placing a monetary value on friendship. For most people finding $8000 means substantial changes to their daily lives for at least a year.

"For many, it will mean giving up or delaying important things. For some, it will mean not eating. It's not unreasonable to say no."
