Dolly Parton once turned down afternoon tea with Kate Middleton - because she couldn't promote her new album.

The 77-year-old revealed back in August that she had been invited to spend time with the Princess of Wales while she was visiting the UK, but regretfully had to decline. She told Claudia Winkleman on her BBC Radio 2 show that she was forced to put business before pleasure and say no.

She said: “This time, Lordy, I even got invited to have tea with Kate [Middleton], and I felt so bad. "I couldn't even because they had all this stuff set up, but I thought that was very sweet and nice of her to invite me to tea. One of these days I'm going to be able to get to do that, wouldn't that have been great? But she wasn't going to promote my rock album so I had to say no. I hope she hears it, though."

Dolly, who has been a country superstar since 1967, added that she hopes the invite will be extended again on a future visit to the UK. She has had encounters with the Royal family before, and previously spoke highly of the Queen after performing at her Silver Jubilee in 1977.

She told in February that she still remembers the pressure to curtsy correctly. She said: "Even though you have to do the protocol, you have to bow and all that, I could tell that she didn't care about that. That's just something she had to do, and if somebody made a mistake, it was OK."

The album she was promoting, Rockstar, was the first time she had ventured in to the genre, and she dedicated the change in sound to her rarely seen husband, Carl Dean. Dolly said that although she's always held a love and appreciation for rock music, her decision to create her first album was largely influenced by her husband's love for the genre.

Dolly told ABC News: "I grew up with him, you know, through the years with him of just hearing all that great music. Of course I knew about rock before, in my early days – Elvis and Jerry Lee and all of them – but it was Carl that really made me make that final decision to think, 'You know what? I've got this great opportunity to do this, and I'm just gonna do it.'"

The 30-track collection includes collaborations with a number of legendary rockstars including Paul McCartney, Sting, Stevie Nicks, Pat Benatar, and Miley Cyrus. Her new release will also cover several classic rock songs highlighting all of her husband's favourites including covers of "Stairway to Heaven," "Free Bird," "Purple Rain," and "Wrecking Ball."
