Brits planning a staycation may want to consider a trip to the charming village tucked away in one of the UK's most beautiful places with gorgeous scenery and breathtaking walks.

Coniston in the Lake District has long been a firm favourite amongst hikers and adventurers, thanks to its location right by Coniston Water, one of England's largest lakes. It makes the village an ideal base if you're hoping to have a go at water sports, or want to take on some of the beautiful walking trails to be found around the water.

Adrenaline seekers can also get their fill thanks to a host of activities including mountaineering and horse riding, or for something more leisurely then Coniston's quintessentially British pubs and breweries could tick all the right boxes.

You can also hire boats or take boat tours of the lake, or for something extra special, you can book in for a ride on the Steam Yacht Gondola, a rebuilt Victorian steam-powered yacht that's run by the National Trust.

The village also makes a brilliant base right by some of the Lake District's best walking routes. For example, the Coniston Old Man fell is one of the national park's highest peaks, and popular with hikers who begin in Coniston and make their way to the top at a leisurely pace, while the Coniston Copper Mines never fail to impress history buffs.

Alternatively, you can head to Coniston Hall on the Lake for some unrivalled views of the Marina - it's a gentle stroll that's often popular with families and cyclists thanks to the easy bridleway path. Another family-friendly day out can also be found at the Lowther Castle & Gardens with the historic castle ruins and picturesque garden landscapes. On a rainy day, a trip to the Ruskin Museum might be in order, or Brantwood House, where John Ruskin lived.

If you're planning a longer stay you can also venture further out and explore some of the wider landscapes which the Lake District is renowned for. Doing so on a budget got a little easier this year too thanks to new £2 bus fares which was extended until December 2024.

Visit the Lake District posted the news on social media , writing: "A large number of services are eligible, including many run by Stagecoach - taking you to destinations like Windermere, Grasmere, Kirkby Lonsdale, Hawkshead, Ulverston, Ullswater, Carlisle, Keswick, Cockermouth and so many more.

"Simply buy your ticket online or on board, with no discount code needed. £2 bus fares are now available until December 2024, so there's plenty of time to explore the Lakes for less. Part of the government's Help for Households campaign."
