'Surge in homelessness is down to failings of Tories who lack compassion'

For most, this Christmas will be a joyous time spent with friends and family. But not all will be so fortunate. An estimated 309,000 people are homeless with many forced to sleep on the streets. And, as we report today, rough sleepers not only have to brave the cold.

There has been a depressing surge in the numbers being abused, set on fire, threatened with knives and urinated on. Politicians such as Suella Braverman, who describe rough sleeping as a “lifestyle choice”, have helped create this climate of hatred.

Yet it is this Government, with its failure to build enough homes and its cuts to services, which is to blame for the shocking rise. Since it took power in 2010, the numbers living on the streets have increased 74%.

Lacking any compassion, the Tories have chosen to demonise rough sleepers. In doing so they have once again shown they are both callous and incompetent.

Just not fare

On a day when Christmas rail travellers were enduring miserable delays and cancellations, ministers announced fares will increase by 4.9%.

The latest hike means they will have gone up 66% since the Tories took office.

Anyone using our over-priced and dilapidated railways will wonder why they are paying more each year for a worsening service.

They will also want to know how, with can-cellations at a record level, rail firms are all-owed to rake in profits and pay huge dividends.

It’s time to end this costly obsession with privatisation and create a publicly owned rail network that puts passengers first.

Bless you all

From all of us at the Mirror to all our readers: A very Merry Christmas!

Wherever you are, however you are celebrating, have a fantastic time.

And thanks to all those who must work this season, from the Forces to the emergency services and NHS staff. We’re in your debt.
