Christmas is almost here, so what better way to see in the big day than with a few festive films. Each year, many of us get in the yuletide spirit with beloved classics like Elf, Love Actually or Home Alone.
But for some, Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the 1989 comedy, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Plenty of hilariously tongue-in-cheek humour abounds in this zany comedy from teen-movie legend John Hughes.
Christmas Vacation is driven by former Saturday Night Live funnyman Chevy Chase, who fronts the film as Clark Griswold, the impulsive and hapless patriarch of the Griswold family. Clark plans for a big family Christmas, which predictably descends into chaos when both sets of parents – and more – turn up to visit.

Despite initially receiving somewhat mixed reviews upon its release, the film grossed more than $71 million worldwide against a $25 million budget. In the more than 30 years since its release, Christmas Vactation has cemented itself as a festive staple and is enjoyed by many every year during the festive season.

It also regularly features in lists of the best ever Christmas films. Last year, Empire readers voted it the 15th best Christmas film of all time, while Esquire has named it second behind It’s a Wonderful Life.

Is National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation on Netflix?
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is not on Netflix in the UK, meaning Netflix members won’t be able to stream the film over the festive period. But there are a host of other Christmassy films on Netflix, including How the Grinch Stole Christmas and The Holiday, plus brand-new blockbusters like Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, Maestro and Rebel Moon.

Here in the UK, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is available to watch on Sky Cinema. It’s also showing on Sky Showcase at 8pm on Thursday, December 21.
