Catherine Tate has been dealt a blow by the BBC.

The comedian's comeback TV series Queen of Oz has been axed after just one series. The scripted comedy aw Tate play the main role as Princess Georgina, a royal party girl, who's spent her life plastered over the tabloids after going from one PR disaster to the next. After yet another scandal emerged, the King decided to send the Princess to Australia, resigning as the monarch of the country in the hope the unprecedented move would give his daughter a sense of responsibility.

Predictably, it doesn't go to plan, with the first series seeing the new Queen bulldoze her way into the country, causing mayhem with fires from discarded cigarettes, incorrect portraits printed on currency and the untimely death of a kangaroo.

But fans won't get to see what escapades are up next, as the show has been axed. Mirror Online has reached out to the BBC for comment.

Before the blow, Catherine, 54, s= praised the BBC for giving her royal-themed show the green-light in the run-up to King Charles' coronation in May this year. In an interview with Variety she said: "I think it's great that the BBC will hold the reins of being in charge of something as incredible as the coronation, but will also go, I guess, 'This is a palate-cleanser and it's a comedy."

When asked if she had anyone in mind when creating the character, she denied it was based on anyone, saying Queen Georgina is "an entirely fictitious creation." But she did say she sympathised with the royals, adding: "It must be awful to be constantly looked at and constantly scrutinise." She later joked: "I can imagine nothing worse than having to dedicate your life to the public.”

Catherine previously hit out at Netflix, after her prison comedy Hard Cell was axed, after premiering in April last year. The sitcom followed the lives of inmates and staff at HMP Woldsley, with Catherine playing a number of characters during the six episodes of the show. Former EastEnders favourite Cheryl Fergison also starred alongside her.

When Netflix decided to cancel the show, Catherine branded the streaming service "rude" for not telling her directly.

Although she said she "kind of" understood why they decided not to renew the series, she would have preferred to have heard it from someone on the phone. She told the BBC Two Breakfast Show: "They had a change of staff and, as happens when someone who has commissioned the show and then leaves, often they want to start afresh."

She added: "I kind of understand but it would’ve been nice for them to have told me."

Catherine also told BBC Radio 2 presenter Zoe Ball" "Do you know Netflix never actually told me (about the decision not to carry on)? So I've never actually had the call to say... nothing.

"Isn't it just rude? I heard from someone else's agent. That was nice."
