A 59-year-old grandad who was killed in a house fire in Scotland has been described by his heartbroken family as a "loving" and "humble" gentleman.

Gerry Chalmers sadly died at the scene of a blaze on Ardgay Street in Glasgow on Saturday, December 9. Emergency services rushed to the scene but Gerry was sadly pronounced dead. His loved ones said he loved his family, especially his little grandson Lennon.

Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire and dozens of tributes have flooded in from devastated locals. Gerry's nephew Connor Docherty said: "He was the most humble and genuine gentleman! Everyone loved him. He loved music and a wee whisky or 10.

"Gerry has got two sons. One lives in America and he has a son here too he loved him to bits. He is a grandad to his wee Lennon, he's the best dad grandad, uncle and godfather to walk the earth. His partner was Elizabeth and they loved watching the football together."

The Daily Record reports that Connor added: "Gerry had two brothers and one sister. His wee brother, Fred, died 17 years ago and my mum, his wee sister Josephine passed away three years ago on December 2, so my wee gran is devastated beyond words."

Jacqueline Rowan said: "RIP cuz you will be missed." Jamie Docherty said: "Rip Uncle G we are absolutely heartbroken, you were one in a million." Sharron Ferrie added: "Rip Gerry."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We were called to a report of a fire at a property on Ardgay Street in the Shettleston area of Glasgow, around 5.55pm on Saturday, 9 December, 2023." They added: "Emergency services attended and a 59-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin are aware. A joint investigation is being carried out with Scottish Fire and Rescue Service."
